text reads: have your say: add your name to the emissions cap consultation
The federal government just released the draft regulations for their emissions cap policy — a common-sense measure to bring down the fossil fuel industry’s emissions in line with the rest of us.

This week, the consultation period for the emissions cap policy opened and already, Conservative opponents are flooding the consultation with anti-cap messages. We need to act fast if we are going to drown them out and secure a strong policy.

Will you add your name to our submission to the emissions cap consultation period, and show our federal leaders that Canadians overwhelmingly support Big Oil doing their fair share to reduce their emissions?

We, members of the public and the Leadnow community, call on the federal government to make the following changes to the regulations for the Oil and Gas Sector Greenhouse Gas Emissions Cap.

1. Finalize and implement the Emissions Cap regulations without delay. We demand that these regulations are finalized and implemented immediately, ahead of the federal budget and the 2025 election.

2. Ramp up the ambition: We are calling on the federal government to align these regulations with Canada’s climate goal of a 40-45 percent emissions reduction by 2030.

3. Close industry loopholes. The draft regulations must be strengthened by closing the remaining loopholes that allow industry to buy their way out of climate action without actually reducing their emissions. We call on you to eliminate compliance flexibilities and carbon offset programs like Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).

4. Go further to usher in a just transition: These regulations are just the beginning. We call on the government to go further to advance a transition away from fossil fuels towards a 100% renewable energy future. That means investment in Indigenous-owned and community-led climate solutions and investments in training programs for workers.

The responsible way to protect Canadians from worsening wildfires and floods is not to keep saying no to climate regulation and turning a blind eye to the very worst polluters, but to make sure all sectors do their fair share. Every day Canadians are doing their part. We look to you to take swift and decisive action to hold the fossil fuel industry accountable for reducing their emissions.
